J. Edmond Massicotte was born in Montreal in 1875.
At the age of 16 he enrolled at the School of Manufacturing Art. He then continued his studies at the Gallery of Art studying under Edmond Dyonnet and at the Monument National, in Montreal. His drawings were published in the popular newspapers and magazines of the time, he produced for the Monde Illustré, for La Presse, for Passe-temps and for the weekly "Samedi" .He is most well known for his nostalgic pieces and his sentimental representations of Quebec folklore and tradition. He also illustrated many terrain books. Twelve of his art pieces were compiled to create an illustrated history book, recounting the lifestyle of early Quebec settlers. Four of the original books were acquired by the Quebec Government and they are conserved at the Quebec Museum.
The images created by Massicotte form part of the collective imagination of all Quebecois.
